Why DPI and pixel size decide print quality
Print sharpness comes from how many pixels you pack into each inch (DPI). A 4 × 6 photo print at 300 DPI needs only 1200 × 1800 pixels, while a 16 × 20 poster at the same density needs 4800 × 6000. If your image has fewer pixels than the target, the print stretches them and looks soft.
Match the source resolution to the gift or poster size before ordering. If the source is smaller, enlarge it with the Image Resizer or choose a smaller format. For crisp photo gifts, aim for at least 300 DPI.
FAQ
Print size and DPI questions
How many pixels do I need for a 4x6 print?
At 300 DPI a 4x6 inch print needs 1200 x 1800 pixels (about 2.2 megapixels). Most modern phone cameras capture 12MP or more, so a 4x6 is well within reach. Use the calculator above to check any size.
What DPI should I use for photo prints?
300 DPI is the standard for sharp photo prints viewed up close. 150 DPI is acceptable for large posters viewed from a distance. Below 150 DPI, prints start to look soft or pixelated.
How do I know if my photo is large enough to print?
Enter your photo’s pixel width and height, then read the "largest print at 300 DPI" result. If the largest print is smaller than the size you want, resize or use a higher-resolution source before ordering.
Is this print size calculator free and private?
Yes. The calculator runs entirely in your browser. You only type numbers — no image is uploaded, so nothing leaves your device.
Should I resize my image before printing a gift?
Match the image resolution to the print size. If the source is smaller than the calculator’s required pixels, enlarge it with the Image Resizer or choose a smaller print. For crisp gifts, aim for at least 300 DPI.
